Senomyx Food For San Diego Children

Senomyx employees sort and bag produce for children’s backpack bags.

Senomyx recently hosted a group trip to the warehouse of a local food bank, Feeding American San Diego (FASD), where more than 30 employees spent their evening sorting, packaging and organizing fresh fruits and vegetables along with canned and bottled goods.

“It was such an amazing yet humbling experience.  To know that so many children, families and elders in San Diego are struggling to put food on the table really puts things in perspective.  I realize how much we take for granted and how much we have to be thankful for each day.” ~ Senomyx employee.

During the visit, Senomyx volunteers added oranges to 416 backpack bags that get distributed to children in San Diego County, packed plums into 350 “family day” bags, sorted through 1,000 pounds of reclamation products, and packed 550 pounds of popcorn into one pound, family-friendly sized bags!

Feeding America San Diego is the largest distributor of donated food in San Diego County and has been going strong since their first distribution in October 2007. The organization distributes over 1.5 million pounds of food a month to more than 190 nonprofit partner agencies throughout San Diego, such as schools, soup kitchens and shelters, and also uses their Mobile Pantry to deliver food to rural areas of San Diego. In addition to program initiatives such as Feeding Kids, Feeding Families and Feeding Seniors, the food bank strives to educate the community about nutrition and provide the healthiest food possible in its distributions.

The Senomyx team gathers at Feeding America San Diego.

Individuals and groups can play a big role in helping Feeding America San Diego reach out to the community through donations, hosting food drives and volunteering. Volunteers contribute more than 20,000 hours to the organization every year, helping to sort, clean, and package food to distribute to over 73,000 hungry children, families and seniors each week. Thanks to volunteers, the organization can put 98 cents out of every dollar towards putting food on peoples’ tables.

Hunger is a real problem throughout our community, with 1 in 4 children in San Diego and 1 in 5 Americans nationwide dealing with food insecurity every day, and we at Senomyx hope our experience will encourage those who do have food on their tables to help those who don’t!
