Senomyx Presents “The Science of Wine” to Benefit Children’s Science & Engineering Education
February 19, 2013 Senomyx Education
February is a very romantic month to open a nice bottle of wine and have some chocolates. But have you ever wondered about the science behind the wine? Well, Senomyx hosted a Science of Wine Event to raise money for the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering (SDFSE). The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering (formerly known as the San Diego Science Festival) features a week of interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and dynamic speakers to engage children and families in science and engineering. Hundreds of community businesses and organizations present more than 35 events throughout the county the week leading up to the finale, EXPO DAY at PETCO Park, which is held on the last Saturday of the Festival. More than 55,000 children, parents, scientists, educators and community members participate in the annual Festival events.
So back to the Science of Wine, right? At the Senomyx Event, presenter Tanya D., head of the Food Science & Technology group at Senomyx, spoke about Taste Science, including different sensory techniques and types of tests. Presenter Joseph P. Noel, Professor, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, spoke about the scientific aspects of wine. Attendees learned about taste perception, as well as recent scientific discoveries and ancient beliefs about red wine, all while sipping several carefully chosen vintages. The presentation was followed by tutored Wine Tastings. And just in case you’re wondering – although the event benefited children’s education, no children were present (they can join us when they’re 21!).
Red wine has great anti-aging properties, as does dark chocolate, so you can have an enjoyable time while staying healthy and happy this year!
