Senomyx Brings Some Flavor to 2012 San Diego Kidney Walk
A team of Senomyx employees and friends gathered recently at NTC (Naval Training Center) Park in Liberty Station, Point Loma, a beautiful area of San Diego, to walk in support of a great organization, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). NKF members organized the Third Annual Kidney Walk in San Diego to raise money and bring awareness to kidney disease and research.
With more than 30 offices nationwide, NKF does a lot to prevent and treat kidney disease. Here are some of the ways they are helping:
- conduct extensive public, patient and professional education
- provide free early detection screenings
- advocate for patients through legislative action
- promote organ donation
- support kidney research to identify new treatments
Kidney disease is a major health problem in the United States and around the world. Roughly 90,000 Americans are on the waiting list for a lifesaving kidney transplant and 382,000 rely on dialysis to keep them alive. Every five minutes someone’s kidneys fail, and 10 people die each day waiting for a kidney transplant. Symptoms may not appear until the kidneys are actually failing, so millions of people with kidney damage remain unaware of their condition and do not take steps to protect the health of their kidneys.
Many children are impacted by kidney disease. According to the National Institute of Health, the incidence of the chronic kidney disease in children has steadily increased over the past two decades.
NKF relies on individual and corporate donations, business partnerships, foundation and government grants, memberships and special events like the Kidney Walk to support its range of programs, services and initiatives. You can support NKF by donating or finding a walk near you.
Get screened! If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease, you are at a much higher risk for kidney disease. Like many diseases, the earlier the detection, the better chance you have to enhance your quality of life and your health.
