Senomyx Employee Proposes a Hair-Raising Challenge

December 12, 2012 Senomyx Health and Wellness

National Marrow Donor ProgramSenomyx employee Andrew (Drew) K. has walked our halls for several years with a very distinct and memorable beard.  Why are we telling you this?  Well, Drew just proposed a very interesting challenge to raise money for a cause that is near and dear to his heart, the National Marrow Donor Program.

For two months Drew will be raising money for the National Marrow Donor Program in honor of his friend, Geoffrey Brown, as well as Senomyx’s late Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Mark Zoller.  “Instead of asking for dollars to run a race, or selling lemonade, I’ll be shaving off my beard in response to raising donations.  I haven’t seen my face in well over six years, so this is no small feat,” Drew stated.

The National Marrow Donor Program helps find donors for people with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma or other diseases through their “Be The Match Registry.”  This Registry connects patients with a matching donor for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant.

The goal of the campaign goal is not only to raise funds for the program, but more importantly to encourage people to consider joining the donor registry. Donor registry is an important aspect of the drive, since having a diverse and large collection of potential marrow donors greatly increases the chance of matching those with life-threatening blood cancers with a cure.

Seventy percent of people do not have a donor in their family and depend on the “Be The Match Registry” to find a match to save their life.  Every year, thousands of adults and children of all ages are diagnosed with blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma, sickle cell anemia or other life-threatening diseases. Many of them will die unless they get a bone marrow or cord blood transplant from a matching donor.

Patients face three formidable barriers:

  • Affording transplant — even with health insurance
  • Finding a matching marrow donor for transplant
  • Developing complications that can keep a transplant out of reach

A gift to First Giving:

  • Delivers tangible relief to patients struggling with thousands in uninsured costs
  • Ignites hope for searching patients by adding donors to the marrow registry
  • Turns the impossible into the achievable by investing in research discoveries

Every year, 10,000 patients need a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor, but only half receive one.  Let’s help the other half!
